The aim of the service is -
to inform, support, assist and empower disabled people and their carers in obtaining the services to which they are entitled, as disabled people and/or carers
We will do this by -
- providing information on any aspect of disabilities
- giving information to individuals about their rights and the standard of service they can expect
- attending meetings with individuals to support them in arguing their case
- if individual cases raise policy issues in relation to public authority services we will seek to explore with the council ways of improving their services
- assist you to remedy situations that are worrying you before they become full blown complaints
What we will not do -
- we will never pass on any information we get about you that you don't want us to
- we will not judge you or telly you what to do
We need Volunteers -
to provide information and support and assist disabled people in exercising their rights, challenging discrimination, and obtaining services.
Volunteers must -
- be committed to the Social Model of Disability
- be impartial and non-judgmental in their dealings with service users
- be willing to listen to service users, and advance the service user's case (rather than imposing their own views)
- understand the importance of confidentiality
- be committed to the principle of equality of opportunity for all
- be willing to commit at least 4 hours per week to the project
Previous experience is not required as full training will be given, and your own experiences, together with a wish to offer support to disabled people and their carers, are just as important. Volunteers will be supervised and supported by GAP Workers.
